For aspiring photographers, make sure that you get the camera that can meet your photography needs. Don’t purchase a camera just because you liked its appearance or if it is similar to a friends camera. There are several things that you should know when picking the right camera. When you’re into landscape photography, you should know the ins and outs; that way, you can take great photos.

Digital cameras don’t use films and instead, you must choose a camera that has a CCD or Charged Coupled Device. This is a chip wherein digital data is converted to store the images on the memory.

Resolution and mega pixels are also great considerations. A digital image is made up of dots called pixels while resolution measures the pixels used in an images digital copy. The price of digital cameras is usually based on the features including the mega pixels. You must first determine your needs as a photographer. Today, you can rarely find PDAs, cell phones, and web cameras that have only a mega pixel (1 million pixels). The lowest so far is the 1.1-2 mega pixels camera. However, this is only good for 4×6 snapshots and if you’re going to print them out, you will not get quality images. This is great if you’re planning to share the pictures through emails and in photo sites; these cameras as also quite affordable. Decent cameras usually have 2.1-3 mega pixels. You can take 4×6 and 5×7 images. Beginners can opt for this camera because it is less costly and it provides quality pictures. With cameras offering 3.1-4 mega pixels, you can produce professional quality images (4×6, 5×7, and 6×9) and decent 8×10 images. As the price of the camera goes higher, you can expect higher mega pixels (4.1 and higher). You can use these cameras if you’re planning to use the pictures for postcards, brochures, etc. These cameras are expensive.

After solving the resolution and mega pixels concerns, you should now look into the cameras lens types, shutter speed, storage capacity, and other useful features. If you understand what these features stand for, you can easily decide on the right digital camera to purchase.

If you want to take good shots of landscape scenes, you must have other equipments with you. You will need a lightweight tripod, GPS, compass, and a map especially if you’re going on a hike to find the perfect setting for your pictures. Creating striking effects is very important in landscape photography. If you have a candy wrapper, preferably the lightly tinted colored cellophane, you can use it to create a unique effect on the images by wrapping it over the camera lens.

You can even change the light on some landscape scenes by using a color correction filter. Make sure that you use the right filter. For instance, if you want to cool down or warm up a certain landscape, using the appropriate filter is vital. Polarizing filters can be used to make the sky darker and for saturating colors; by using this kind of filter you can bring out the faint details of the images.

Taking pictures early in the morning and late evenings can produce exotic landscape pictures. Low level sunlight can create shadows that bring out the landscapes subtle textures. You will be able to produce breathtaking and beautiful pictures.

It is also recommended that beginners take short courses on digital landscape photography. There are so many things that you need to learn if you’re really serious with this kind of profession. Hand-on experience is also vital so that you can have the actual feel of taking landscape scenes. Find an experienced photographer in your area and join him or her. The beauty of nature is endless and very captivating.

You must ensure that the subject you’re trying to capture is in focus. Set the aperture setting to small because it can give your shots greater depth but you must also adjust the shutter speed and the ISO settings. To ensure camera stillness, you should use a tripod especially if you’re waiting for the perfect moment to take the shot. Determine a focal point so that the photos will not look empty.

Black and white landscape photography is the hardest section to attain true artistry because you are not relying on the colors as much as the lights and shadows the image will create.  Composition is very important.  Composition in photography means to look for sharp edges, tones and textures.  The basis of black and white photography is getting the camera to see what your eye sees in color; to bring the highlights and shadows forward with the angle of the picture. 

Typical subjects for black and white photography are buildings and water.  Water gives the surrounding trees and rocks a contrast while drawing the eye.  Landscape can encompass buildings or bridges among other subjects.  Buildings lend to the angles and contrast you seek when trying for definition and emotion.

When landscape photography is your subject in color you will need to have contrast between the colors.  If the sky is blue and you have blue water below chances are the picture is not going to have the contrast you are hoping for.  Like black and white photography you need to have definition or composition in the shot.  You will need to take a few minutes to set up the shot and perhaps take several frames before being satisfied.  Color photography takes less skill than black and white photography so if you have master the last you will succeed at the first.

Lighting for landscape photography is natural rather artificial.  This is important when setting up your shot.  You will need to have filters for the sunlight if it is a bright day, perhaps a tripod to set up the shot and a professional grade camera to create professional prints.  Studying your subject from all angles is also important.  You want to make sure you are picking the best angle for the shot.  Remember the message is brought forth by the skill of the photographer.

You abilities should be honed and practiced.  Digital photography makes landscape photography easier because you can assess the photo before you leave a site.  Again the LCD screen isn’t going to show you every aspect of the print so you will want to take a few shots of the same site to ensure a perfect picture.

Even being an amateur photographer you can gain professional looking landscape photography.  The best way to gain great photographs is to practice with a subject.  Going back to the same site during different seasons can help you hone your skills and net you an even better print the next time around.  All photographers’ start at the same level, some may have innate skills and an eye for the photo, but practice will lead to the best print.  Landscape photography may not require the skills of wildlife photography with panning the subject or portraits where you have to enliven your subject; however, it does require skills and practice.
