In Action Sports Digital Photography, how do I freeze the action?

By Jerry J. Jansen On February 6, 2009 NO COMMENTS

As a action sports digital photographer you will want to freeze the action of your subject most of the time. What sells photographs and what the viewers want to see in action sports photography are people suspended in mid-air. They want to see the ball, what ever kind of ball, just lying off of the receiver’s finger tips. To do that you must freeze the action.

To freeze the action the action sports digital photographer uses the shutter speed which is perhaps the most creative adjustment available. The shutter speed allows the photographer to freeze the action by creating a variety of photo effects. The shutter speed is expressed in fractions of seconds depending on the length of exposure. A shutter speed of 1/640 of a second or faster should freeze the action and keep your image sharp. A high shutter speed of 1/1000 of a second or faster can freeze the action of even very fast moving objects. You will however have to keep two things in mind:

1. You will need a brightly lit subject. You see shutter speeds this high doesn’t allow your camera much time to gather in the light for the proper exposure. You can usually get

What is Shutter Lag and How Can I Overcome It?

By Jerry J. Jansen On January 7, 2009 NO COMMENTS

I have a small digital camera by Norcent. It is a 10 MegaPixels camera and takes pretty good pictures. But one thing that I really hate about it is shutter lag. So shooting action shots is very difficult to catch just the right moment. When trying to take pictures of my dog I get the position to take a great shot but by the time I press the shutter release button and the shutter actually fires in around a second. By then my dog has moved and I didn’t get the shot I was expecting.

Shutter lag is the time between when you press the shutter release button and your camera actually takes the photo. All digital cameras have some shutter lag especially the cheaper brands and models. It may be only a fraction of a second for the more expensive cameras to over a second for the cheaper brands.

To help with overcoming shutter lag you can first pre-focus your camera by pressing the shutter release half way down allowing your camera to focus. Next, holding the shutter release half way down until you are ready to take the photo. This will save you precious milliseconds that the camera takes to

Welcome to Elite Digital Photography!

By Jerry J. Jansen On December 18, 2008 NO COMMENTS

Welcome to Elite Digital Photography. Here I will blog about my camera, photos, software, accessories, and reviews on cameras, software, and accessories. I also have a website here at http://www.elitedigitalphotography.com where I will be posting more information, offers, photo albums, and forums.

I just received my new Nikon D90 Camera Wednesday, December 17th, 2008 as a kit with Nikon two Lenses (Nikon 18-55mm VR and Nikon 55-200mm VR), wide angle lens, telephoto lens, camera bag, hard case, tripod, 16 Gig Memory, Filters, Remote, and other accessories. Now I have to learn how to use it.

Nikon D90 Digital SLRI plan on joining our local Metro Camera Club in January 2009 and possibly taking a course at Moore-Norman VoTech which is only one mile from my home here in Oklahoma City, OK.

I will be trying out my camera and taking some photos this Sunday at my church, The Rock, for the children’s Christmas play and then for our Men’s Sunday School class Christmas party in the evening.

I will write more after Sunday to let you know how it all turned out.
